IPad Review
The first IPad app I reviewed is called "Stack the States". I feel that that is a great learning game for kids who are learning about the states and capitols. As well as nicknames for the states. I have actually used this app with my niece last school year to help her learn her states and capitols. Now my nephew uses the app to learn with. The app cost $3 to purchase, but it is well worth the price. It has helped my niece and nephew tremendously. Very great app. for learning.
My math App is the second Ipad app that i have used with my sister's children. This was a free app i found to help the her kids with math. With this app they can practice their division, multiplication, addition, and subtraction. They are also timed on how long it takes them to go through the flashcards. Now that that they are both learning to do their multiplication facts, this will help them a lot. they can learn to go faster as they learn their multiplication facts. I think it is a good app. i have fun playing with the her kids with these two apps for a couple of school years now.

Rubric for Evaluating WebQuests
The WebQuest format can be applied to a variety of teaching situations. If you take advantage of all the possibilities inherent in the format, your students will have a rich and powerful experience. This rubric will help you pinpoint the ways in which your WebQuest isn't doing everything it could do. If a page seems to fall between categories, feel free to score it with in-between points.
|
|
|
|
|
|
| Overall Aesthetics (This refers to the WebQuest page itself, not the external resources linked to it.) | ||||
|
Overall Visual
Appeal
|
0 points There are few or no graphic elements. No variation in layout or typography. OR Color is garish and/or typographic variations are overused and legibility suffers. Background interferes with the readability. |
2 points Graphic elements sometimes, but not always, contribute to the understanding of concepts, ideas and relationships. There is some variation in type size, color, and layout. |
4 points Appropriate and thematic graphic elements are used to make visual connections that contribute to the understanding of concepts, ideas and relationships. Differences in type size and/or color are used well and consistently. See Fine Points Checklist. |
I give this section a 4. It is not to overly complicated and very easy to follow. The graphics and visual aids were to assist in the lesson. |
|
Navigation & Flow
|
0
points Getting through the lesson is confusing and unconventional. Pages can't be found easily and/or the way back isn't clear. |
2
points There are a few places where the learner can get lost and not know where to go next. |
4
points Navigation is seamless. It is always clear to the learner what all the pieces are and how to get to them. |
I give this section a 4. This was easy for the student to follow and it had a good flow. |
|
Mechanical Aspects
|
0
points There are more than 5 broken links, misplaced or missing images, badly sized tables, misspellings and/or grammatical errors. |
1 point There are some broken links, misplaced or missing images, badly sized tables, misspellings and/or grammatical errors. |
2
points No mechanical problems noted. See Fine Points Checklist. |
I give this section 1.5. There was only one link that would not work when you clicked on it, but if you copied and pasted it to your explorer then it worked fine. |
| Introduction | ||||
|
Motivational
Effectiveness of Introduction
|
0 points The introduction is purely factual, with no appeal to relevance or social importance OR The scenario posed is transparently bogus and doesn't respect the media literacy of today's learners. |
1 point The introduction relates somewhat to the learner's interests and/or describes a compelling question or problem. |
2 points The introduction draws the reader into the lesson by relating to the learner's interests or goals and/or engagingly describing a compelling question or problem. |
I think the introduction was good but could have been better. could have used some kind of cartoon to draw the student in. I give this section a 1.5. |
|
Cognitive
Effectiveness of the Introduction
|
0 points The introduction doesn't prepare the reader for what is to come, or build on what the learner already knows. |
1 point The introduction makes some reference to learner's prior knowledge and previews to some extent what the lesson is about. |
2 points The introduction builds on learner's prior knowledge and effectively prepares the learner by foreshadowing what the lesson is about. |
This area is very well explained as to what the student will be doing in this lesson. I give this a 4. |
| Task (The task is the end result of student efforts... not the steps involved in getting there.) | ||||
|
Connection of Task
to Standards
|
0 points The task is not related to standards. |
2 point The task is referenced to standards but is not clearly connected to what students must know and be able to do to achieve proficiency of those standards. |
4 points The task is referenced to standards and is clearly connected to what students must know and be able to do to achieve proficiency of those standards. |
The task in this lesson is very simple an easy to follow. However, it could have been more engaging to the student. I gve this section a 3. |
|
Cognitive Level of
the Task
|
0 points Task requires simply comprehending or retelling of information found on web pages and answering factual questions. |
3 points Task is doable but is limited in its significance to students' lives. The task requires analysis of information and/or putting together information from several sources. |
6 points Task is doable and engaging, and elicits thinking that goes beyond rote comprehension. The task requires synthesis of multiple sources of information, and/or taking a position, and/or going beyond the data given and making a generalization or creative product. See WebQuest Taskonomy. |
I find that these web pages were interesting but there could have been more to the lesson and been more engaging to the student. I give this a 3. |
| Process (The process is the step-by-step description of how students will accomplish the task.) | ||||
|
Clarity of
Process
|
0 points Process is not clearly stated. Students would not know exactly what they were supposed to do just from reading this. |
2 points Some directions are given, but there is missing information. Students might be confused. |
4 points Every step is clearly stated. Most students would know exactly where they are at each step of the process and know what to do next. |
4points. The student would/should not be lost in any part of this section. Very simple. |
|
Scaffolding of
Process
|
0 points The process lacks strategies and organizational tools needed for students to gain the knowledge needed to complete the task. Activities are of little significance to one another and/or to the accomplishment of the task. |
3 points Strategies and organizational tools embedded in the process are insufficient to ensure that all students will gain the knowledge needed to complete the task. Some of the activities do not relate specifically to the accomplishment of the task. |
6 points The process provides students coming in at different entry levels with strategies and organizational tools to access and gain the knowledge needed to complete the task. Activities are clearly related and designed to take the students from basic knowledge to higher level thinking. Checks for understanding are built in to assess whether students are getting it. See: |
I give this a 5 in this area. While it does engage the student and asks questions, I feel that it needs to be a bit more involved. I have seen several of these cartoons and some have been made by extreamly large and well known companies such as Disney. This would have been interesting for the student to see, know, and evaluate. |
|
Richness of
Process
|
0 points Few steps, no separate roles assigned. |
1 points Some separate tasks or roles assigned. More complex activities required. |
2 points Different roles are assigned to help students understand different perspectives and/or share responsibility in accomplishing the task. |
1point. There needs to be a better objective or end result. |
| Resources (Note: you should evaluate all resources linked to the page, even if they are in sections other than the Process block. Also note that books, video and other off-line resources can and should be used where appropriate.) | ||||
|
Relevance &
Quantity of Resources
|
0 points Resources provided are not sufficient for students to accomplish the task. OR There are too many resources for learners to look at in a reasonable time. |
2 point There is some connection between the resources and the information needed for students to accomplish the task. Some resources don't add anything new. |
4 points There is a clear and meaningful connection between all the resources and the information needed for students to accomplish the task. Every resource carries its weight. |
I give this a 3. There are more resources out there that could have been used. |
|
Quality
of
Resources |
0 points Links are mundane. They lead to information that could be found in a classroom encyclopedia. |
2 points Some links carry information not ordinarily found in a classroom. |
4 points Links make excellent use of the Web's timeliness and colorfulness. Varied resources provide enough meaningful information for students to think deeply. |
I give this a 4. While I think that there could have been more, the resources were very useful. |
| Evaluation | ||||
|
Clarity of
Evaluation Criteria
|
0 points Criteria for success are not described. |
3 points Criteria for success are at least partially described. |
6 points Criteria for success are clearly stated in the form of a rubric. Criteria include qualitative as well as quantitative descriptors. The evaluation instrument clearly measures what students must know and be able to do to accomplish the task. See Creating a Rubric. |
I give this a 6. Everything was explained clearly. |

I find that this site if very
helpful. All of the questions and web links are there. The student would only
need to follow the web links and obtain the required answers. This is a
wonderful WebQuest for group study.
|
I really don’t find any weaknesses
with this site for group tasks.
|
Shakespeare
|
I find that this page is as a
group project is good. Again all of the links and resources are there.
|
Too long of a project. Not schools
have access to computers in class every day and may not have PowerPoint installed
in them. This is very time consuming.
|
Earthquake
|
Everything was there all you had
to do was follow instructions and follow the web links to the sites.
|
This is very time consuming.
Building materials may not be readily accessible. This would not only involve
class work but after school working and meetings.
|
Foreign Country
|
This is has all the information
and web links and easy to follow.
|
Again not every classroom has
computers in it and this is a power point project. This is not a group
project.
|
Waves & Sound
|
All of the information and web
links are present and easy to follow. Seems like it would be a quick lesson.
|
This is not a group project but
for individual study.

Deconstructing Digital Natives: Chapter 8 Beyond Google and The "Satisficing" Searching of Digital Natives.
1. What is the purpose of this chapter?
How students, who are so clearly familiar and apparently adept with Internet tools, are at times so poor at using the Internet academically.
2. What is the major finding from a review of studies that have looked at technology adoption of young people?.
Does this finding seem to reflect your own use of technology? Most students are comfortable with the idea that they are avid users and adapters of new technologies.
I am comfortable with using most technology but do not feel that I am completely knowledgeable in the area.
3. How do the authors define Information Literacy?
The set of skills and knowledge that allows us to find, evaluate, and use the information that we need, as well as filter out the information we don't need.
4. What is the "clear message" from a review of the studies focused on college students information seeking behavior? Do these findings reflect your own information seeking behaviors?
Students had difficulties conducting college level research and were challenged by the tasks of accessing appropriate research material, narrowing down their search topics to make them more manageable, and were overwhelmed by the scope and range of resources available to them.
I understand this statement. Sometimes I am confused by the information that is presented to me and how to make sure it is true and accurate information. This class has went along way in helping me sort some of it out but sometimes I still feel confused.
5. What does the term "satisfcing" in the area of decision making mean?
When presented with a range of options that could be pursued, a satisficing decision is one that is acceptable to the individual based on some personal criterion, but it is a decision or course of action that is known to be the best one.
6. What are the differences to deep and surface level approaches to a learning task?
The students that who adopted a deep approach to the learning task were inclined to focus on trying to comprehend the meaning behind learning material, whereas students who adopted a surface approach to the learning task tended to focus on simply reproducing what was contained within the learning material with little concern for understanding the overall meaning.
7. What should educators aim to do to improve the scripts student have for sophisticated online information seeking?
The behavior and attitudes of students when it comes to scholarly information seeking is indicative of satisficing search strategies that are associated with a surface approach to learning in higher education.
8. Why is Google's page rank system problematic for information seeking?
The pagerank algorithm that underpins Google's search results associates relevance with visibility ( the more pages that link to a given page the higher its ranking).
9. Are you "digitally wise" when it comes to information seeking? Give an example of how you approached an information seeking task for one of your academic courses this semester (do not include this class). I have found that I can start with a search engine and go form there. Google, or Firefox or I may even use wikipedia pages for a basis to start my research. I then use the links or web pages. Then possibly look up other webpages with the information I am seeking. I try to validate the information given/
10. Has the popularity of the Internet and the information contained on the Web created a new problem for undergraduate students research skills? Why of Why not?
I feel that it has. If a student is not sure how to filter the information given it can cause problems for that student.

Objectivity
Objectivity: What is the author's point of view? Summarize the argument being presented. What is the purpose of the site?
The purpose of this site is for the Forbes magazine and their coverage of their ideas about money issues.
The authors point of view is to give some basic and possibly unknown knowledge about the tax cuts and whether or not it does create a possibility for jobs and to help the unemployment rate.
He states that even though governments does give tax cuts for those companies willing to hire it still does not create real jobs. He gives statistics about how many people are still actually looking for work and how even with the tax cuts that the big companies are still making a profit and still hiring very little personell.

Double Entry Journal # 12
Why do educators need to be careful about terms like "Digital Native"? A majority of the students may possess a core set of technology-based skills but they are in a very diverse range of skills and skill levels that exist across the student population. There is more variance across individuals than is suggested by broad generalizations such as the “Digital Native” or the “Net Generation.”
2. What outcome occurs when young people are encourage to transform their understanding of particular topics by designing a multimodal text? Positive and enhanced outcomes have been reported.
3. You may skip the section titled "Context for the Project”
4. What was the goal of the project in terms of product? The goal was to track the development of the participants' multimodal literacies over a two-year period by comparing tow multimodal products created at the beginning and end of the period.
5. What was the goal of the project in terms of process? The goal in the terms of process was to gain a deeper understanding oh how multimodal texts were created, especially when the students were working in pairs at the computer.
6. How were the participants fro the study selected? They reviewed all students' products from years 8-10 to identify general characteristics and trends among the multimodal features. From that analysis, the selected ten students who best represented the cohorts and the multimodal products of these students provided the core product data in the study.
7. Describe the task students engage is for the purpose of this study? They were to complete a concept map to organize information acquired from web sources and a decision making matrix to facilitate transformation of the ideas in their concept map ino a preferred solution, as required for their multimodal text. Then following these preparatory stages, the students could create a multimodal text using a word processor, a presentation tool, or a web publishing program.
8. Explain how the researchers compared the student created multimodal texts? They created a 3 x 3, tow-dimensional approach that evaluated the title slide/page, the headings, and the knowledge representation of each multimodal text in terms of design, content, and cohesion.
9. What differences in Jenny's PowerPoint presentation do you find the most interesting? I find the fact that she used more colors and different fonts in the younger years as to when she was older.
10. How is working together on a computer unlike working together using a pencil and paper?1. While typed words may appear immediately on scree, there is ofter a considerable wait time between the keying in of the instruction and a response from the computer. 2. The length of the wait time in unpredictable and may be several minutes. 3. The result the computer provides to an instruction is often unexpected, as in the selection and the ordering of items located in a web search.
11. What was interesting about student's behavior as they collaborated on a task at the computer? I found it interesting that they talked about off-task item while waiting for a result to show up on the computer but as soon as the result came available they resumed their work.
12. What can teacher learn about designing learning activities that involve the creation of multimodal texts from this study? That it is important to develop students time management skills and a sense of priorities in relation to the task at hand.
13. According the the conclusion of this study, what do student need to learn in order to successful complete a multimodal text construction? Students still need the basic same skills to complete tasks as previous generations.
14. Are you surprised by the conclusions drawn in this study? No, even though we have more information and better technology than previous generations, each student still needs the basic skills to complete their tasks and to do them appropriately.

Double entry Journal #10
- What is the fundamental problem with the discourses around children's use of technology? They fundamentally fail to reflect the diversity and complexity to be found in real lives. This weakens in the discourses can have real impacts on the way these views are taken up and embedded in policy.
- What is meant by the term “moral panic?”Moral panic is a term that has arisen to describe conditions in which an identified group in society is portrayed as a threat to social values and norms.
- How do you feel in engaging in more “collaborative learning” during your education at Fairmont State? This is a good idea in a sense but I personally enjoy the more personal feel of the classroom.
- Do you think Universities should move to a more free-market based privatization business model? Why?No. I too feel that it would harm the most basic and functionality of most universities. I feel that technology is a wonderful start for any university but it still needs to be kept at a more personal level with human interaction.
- According to the author, what is wrong with Prenskey's revised position on his definition of “digital native?” Do you agree with this authors ciriticism of Prenskey's view of the role technology plays in the education of young people?Prenskey's revision is deterministic; it suggests that digital enhancement is essential, and even though it moves beyond a straightforward divide between immigrants and natives, the argument retains a simple moral imperative: digital enhancement has to be accepted in order for it to succeed.I do agree that digital enhancement in necessary and it needs to be accepted but not everybody is going to want to be digitized. I don't want to have every aspect of my education controlled by a computer.
- What are the characteristics of Mellennial? Are you a Mellennial?Millennials are a recent outcrop of a long historical process and the fusion of the idea of the Net Generation with the idea of Mellennials in the work of cementing this cyclical generational view into the idea of a Net Generation in education.I am not sure if I am a Mellennial or not. I believe that technology is a necessary evil that now will not go away and therefore we must use it or be outsourced. But on the other hand I feel that this advancement in education will be extremely helpful for our future generations.
- Do you think there is such a thing as the Net Generation? Why or Why not?No. I feel that there is going to be more children and adults using the new technology but to say that this is all this generation will do and to label them as the Net Generation is wrong. They will be growing up with the technology and will have a better understanding then the generations before them but I would not refer to them as such.
- What is meant by the term “networked individualism?”Wellman has characterized this kind of relationship in relation to community, stressing that community can be found in the networks rather than groups.
- How would you feel about Fairmont State discontinuing the use of Blackboard and Webmail to using Gmail and Google Tools? This is an easy question for me. I like my Blackboard and Webmail. It took me a very long time in trying to figure it out and pride myself in knowing how it works. As for Gmail and Google tools I am still trying to figure out.
- Why does the term “Digital Native” persist despite lack of empirical evidence of age related difference due to rapid increase of digital technologies? There is a general need to stereotype in order to reduce the complexity and to apply simplified rules of thumb.
- Who societal sector seems to be benefiting the most from the social construction of a “Digital Native” generation?Commercial and market interests play a part in this persistence.
- Which argument about “Digital Natives” needs to be discarded and which one needs to be explored? Why?The ones to be discarded are 1) the ubiquitous nature of certain technologies, specifically gaming and the Web, has affected the outlook of an entire age cohort in advanced economies. 2) the new technologies emerging with this generation have particular characteristics that afford certain types of social engagement. Reason being 1) these arguments need to be abandoned in the face of the empirical evidence and 2) like the idea of localized functions of the brain in phrenology, is the rational kernel at the heart of the argument. The one that needs exploring is the idea that the area of choice in educations has been expanded by new technologies.

Skype session
I found the skype session very interesting. Technology is always changing. I would never have thought that it would one day be possible to talk to a person face to face via the computer whether it be a few blocks away, states away, even in other countries.
I would find it very interesting to use this for educational purposes. If a field trip is not in the budget you can always contact someone to give a lesson thru skype. For example, I would contact someone at the Smithsonian to do a history lesson and to show the particular exibit that I would want my students to see and explore. Skype, if used properly, could be used in a whole new way.
I found the following web pages about at teacher who taught her students how to use Skype. She has also added an instructional video and written instructions. http://coolcatteacher.blogspot.com/2006/10/using-skype-in-classroom-or-just.html

Photo and Questions

I would use this photo to teach my students the similarities
and the differences between the two presidents. Even though they were
presidents of a divided nation, Davis of the Confederacy and Lincoln of the
Union, they had many similarities and many differences.
1.
What is the home state of each president?
2.
Are their beliefs in slavery the same or
different?
3.
Why did each president choose the side that did?
4.
What other similarities do these pictures
present?
5. How did each president serve their country
before the Civil WarDouble Entry Journal # 7

people living in developing countries and people living in modernized
countries.
Food Production will have to increase by 40 percent over the next twenty years. It is believed that the world will not be able to produce enough food to feed itself. The land is already unstable and underground water levels are already being depleted and nitrate pollution by fertilizers are just two frequent symptoms
2. What is the major debate around the future of market-based economies?
The debate is about how to balance the market-oriented approach with this or that regulatory feature or social safety policy.

3. How has this technological revolution different the previous technological revolutions and what two factors of production and now more important than capital, labor and raw materials?

4. What new service ideas have you had direct experience with? Drawing on your personal experience what are the benefits and drawbacks of these new service ideas?
I have had experience with
bundling and unbundling. I bought a laptop a few years ago and also bought an additional
repair service for and additional two years. Within the three years my computer
started having some issues with the hard drive. The company could not repair it over the phone
the diagnosed it as the hard drive. They sent everything to pack the computer up,
included a shipping label, and I just had to drop it off at UPS. They repaired
it and I had it back within about a week. I am so happy I bought the extra warranty
as I don’t think I would have been able to repair this on my own.
Quote:
“An example of
bundling to come: multi-use smart cards with biometric data that would serve
simultaneously as identity cards; airport security devices, credit or debit
cards, frequent flyer, hotel and car rental cards; telephone cares; medical
insurance cards; and even voter registration.”
This quote just plain scares me. I cannot imagine having my
drivers’ license, debit card, insurance cards, or any other cards tied
together. If you lose it, you are in a world of hurt. We already have identity
theft and these people only need the barest of information to steal ones
identity. If all of this information was to be tied in together as one card and
it is lost, that person is going to be in trouble. Your money will be gone, your
driver’s license would be gone, and your insurance would be abused and gone. It
would be a hardship to the person to get this card replaced. It is very difficult
now just to get one of these cards replaced in today’s world. I don’t like this
idea and do not find it feasible.

Action Obama
| People | Objects | Activities |
| Mr. Obama | American Flag | Walking |
| Looks like some of his staff | Ship/Boad | Talking |
| Maybe a couple of naval officals | Truck | Listening |
| Sailors/Coast Guards | Crane |
Based on what you have observed list three things you might infer from the photograph.
a. Pres. Obama Looks happy
b.Obama looks like he is listening to the people around him.
c. It looks like a pretty day weather wise.
What questions do the caption and article title raise in your mind?
If this is such a serious situation, why does he look happy?
Who are all of these people and why are they so important?
Which picture gives you more confidence in the presidents leadership abilities? Why?
I feel that picture one is the better of the two and he looks like he is paying more attention to the situation and he does not looks as if he is blowing it off as he looks like he is doing in the second picture.
Do you think the editors of these news papers have a liberal or conservative bias? Why? How could you find out?
I am not sure if the editors are liberal or conservative. But you can research these papers and their editors on the internet and draw your own concluscions.
